"(WANE-TV  Fort Wayne, IN  November 9, 2004) The people in a new public service announcement are not actors reading from a script. They are Jennifer Sheron from Fort Wayne and her two young sons who are re-living a real-life story. In July, they were involved in a roll-over accident on I-69 that could of been much worse if the boys had not been buckled in their booster seats. "Hearing the children screaming. I reached back and I watched my 2 year old hanging upside down in his seat." The PSA is to remind parents of the new law taking effect in July. Children up until age 8 need to be in a booster seat once they are too big to be out of a car seat. "What we want to make sure is the lap belt hits them in the boney part of the hips." Jean Joley with the SAFE Kids Coalition knows these seats are life savers. "What this does is lift up the child so it takes the direct hit on the boney structure. The belt across the shoulder stops them from lunging forward. This booster seat has an area that adjusts to slide the seat belt down." If a parent's seven year old can sit in a regular seat with their knees bent, that's legal. There is a provision in the new law that allows police officers to make the call. "The safety of your children should be the first thing on your mind when you get in a motorized vehicle," says Jennifer who can attest to that first hand.
